Those who come to this manga looking for more of the "hot guy on the cover," however, will have plenty of reasons to keep the pages turning. Tsuzuki's devil-may-care personality is a refreshing counterpoint to a world that ought to be drowning in angst. Meanwhile, his younger partner has a tortured past that puts Tsuzuki's attitude in perspective. If there ever was such a thing as dark fluff, this is it--a carefree, joke-cracking main character ("This isn't a yaoi comic!" he says in one aside) set against background themes of death and the selfishness of humans. There's potential for some great interpersonal dynamics here, but Yoko Matsushita prefers to tease us by having the boys mutter something to each other and then dive back into the investigation. Sure, they won't be making out anytime soon, but it's the possibility of such that keeps readers interested in these characters.

Of course, the guys wouldn't be nearly as interesting if they weren't gorgeous to start with. The character designs in this manga are typical fare for shoujo, with intense broody eyes and sleek hair dominating. The backgrounds rely a little too much on textures and tones; this is fine during conversations but it undermines the sense of location in action scenes. However, the weakest part of the artwork is the layout--Matsushita can draw pretty pictures just fine, but she lacks the craftsmanship to place them on the page. The scattershot, irregularly shaped panels disrupt the flow of reading rather than create a dynamic sequence from one panel to the next. This flow is also hampered by the ambiguously placed speech bubbles, not to mention the lines of internal monologue that keep interrupting them. From a visual standpoint, Descendants of Darkness is gracefully drawn but stumbles in trying to tell the story.

The on-disc extras include the final two editions of the First-Press Extras, this time featuring the seiyuu for Kagero, Gennosuke, and Oboro. As has been typical of their predecessors, they are fun views but not especially informative. Accompanying them are the standard company trailers and textless songs. Less typical in the Limited Edition version is the five panel double-sided fold-out booklet containing a staff round table discussion and character and background sketches. Also present are a random assortment of three image cards featuring characters from the series, some nice bonus artwork on the interior panels, and a slipcover with artwork identical to the DVD case.

The bloody and tragic tale of Basilisk comes to an end as, one way or another, each of the remaining ninja must confront their fates. The ultimate result shouldn't surprise, given how things have been set up to this point, but the entertainment is in seeing how it gets there and enjoying the fine visuals along the way.

For all its graphic content and super-powered action, the core of Basilisk is its quality visuals, and that remains true through to the end. Gonzo sees no letdown here, finishing out the series with a volume that might be called beautiful if it wasn't so violent and blood-stained. All the thing the series has been praised for so far are still here: pleasing character designs, sharp use of color and color schemes, flashy effects, quality backgrounds, and animation that's smooth when it isn't using shortcuts. All-in-all, the look of the series has a richness to it that you just don't see in even most of the better-looking anime series. As with most previous volumes, the graphic content provides scenes which tantalize the viewer with the exposed flesh of its prettier female characters while going to almost absurd lengths to avoid showing actual nudity.

The opening and closing themes remain unchanged, although the final episode skips the prologue and adds on an epilogue. The soundtrack does its job well but does not especially stand out. The English VAs have mastered their roles by this point, providing a dub which satisfyingly portrays the emotions and pain of the characters without going overboard and hits the right tone in each case; Mark Stoddard and Stephanie Young prove to be particularly good fits as Tenzen and Kagero respectively, each closely mirroring the original performances. The English script, as always with FUNimation, is much more of an issue, as it goes as far as changing the meaning of some scenes in minor ways. If you can tolerate that, though, then you should find the dub for the final volume to be sufficient.

Now the DVD presentation: First off, let it be known that Crush Digital Video menus really really blow--they're unusably slow and not PC mouse-supported. The video itself is adequate in quality, with a little bit of a halo effect left over from the analog post-production. It's a fact of life. The transfer is fair, with the colors looking a bit washed out in places and some clipping of the top left corner. The MPEG-2 compression is actually very nice, with pixellation only becoming apparent in scenes of almost total black.

The subtitles are standard for anime DVD's... meaning white with almost no border. It looks all right here, since the film is very dark overall, but many titles are mis-timed, resulting in up to three seconds of dialogue at a strech with no titles at all. No translations are omitted, but to those that don't know Japanese, it can be disconcerting. The translations themselves are very good -- typical Neil Nadelman fare. The dubbed version is one of the older Manga Video dub jobs, with good post-production values, but only fair quality. It's unfortunate that the English cast seems too preoccupied with sounding like good voice talent, but not in expressing the innocence of the characters.

I normally regard Yoshiaki Kawajiri as being generally overhyped when it comes to anime directors. I wasn't overly enamored with Ninja Scroll. Demon City Shinjuku and Cyber City Oedo 808 were entertaining, but ultimately mind candy. Birdy the Mighty was pretty fun, and Wicked City was too, in an entirely different way. We shall not mention the "Satanica" pilot. And then there's A Wind Named Amnesia: a total gem from a director with a very spotty record.

There's not too much story here, but that's OK -- this isn't about a story, this is about people, and what really motivates them. While the ending seems a bit taylored to fit in a quick sex scene (which seems TOTALLY inappropriate here), where the film leaves off is satisfying. It's not one of those films you watch and forget about. You ponder what happens for days afterward.

Viz's translated dialogue makes for smooth reading, with a conversational style and the occasional clever quip. Sadly, the dialogue isn't as enjoyable as it could be for the visual reasons mentioned above. The sound effects are all changed to English in the artwork, eliminating any traces of Japanese, but this results in some rather goofy "sounds" like "attack," "defend," "leap" and "land." Admittedly, the Japanese lexicon of comic book sound effects is more varied than the American one, but translating sounds into verbs is rather clunky compared to simply substituting an onomatopoeic word. A better solution--already adopted by some publishers--is to provide a translation in small print next to the Japanese sound effects. Certainly it would save the trouble of editing every single effect.

Since this is only the beginning of Descendants of Darkness, there's always the hope that the manga improves as it plunges further into the story. Tsuzuki and Hisoka ought to spend more time talking to each other (and comforting each other) about their troubles, but in this first volume they don't; the premise of the manga could yield some intriguing supernatural-detective exploits, but here it doesn't. There's also the issue of the directionally confused panel layouts, which could easily be resolved by the manga-ka getting some more practice. Ultimately, Descendants of Darkness is lacking in some departments, but with a little brushing up, it could become an adventurous and possibly even romantic tour into the land of the dead.
